Arriving in the Heart of Winter

As you approach Białka Tatrzańska, the road begins to wind between snowy fields and pine-covered hills. Wooden cottages appear one by one, their roofs blanketed in white. It’s here, in the heart of Podhale, where skiers and families return year after year for a peaceful mix of adventure and mountain charm.

The village is easy to reach from two airports, Kraków Balice in Poland and Poprad–Tatry in Slovakia. From Kraków, the drive takes about two and a half hours, depending on weather. From Poprad, it’s roughly an hour and a half across the scenic Tatra foothills.

Preparing Before Arrival

Before setting off, it’s worth organizing a few details so you can enjoy your stay to the fullest. You can purchase Tatry Super Ski passes online at sklep.tatrysuperski.pl, which give access to more than twenty ski resorts in the region. With one pass, you can explore not only Białka Tatrzańska but also Bukowina, Jurgów, and Czarna Góra.

On the Slopes

At the center of Białka stands Kotelnica Białczańska, the village’s main ski resort and part of the Tatry Super Ski network. The resort offers a wide range of runs, from gentle slopes for beginners to longer, more challenging routes for advanced skiers. The lifts are modern, and most slopes are equipped for night skiing, creating a distinctive winter atmosphere under the lights.

If you’d like to improve your technique or you’re skiing for the first time, Stok Ski School in Białka offers lessons in English for both adults and children.

For a traditional experience, consider booking a kulig, a horse-drawn sleigh ride through snow-covered meadows and forest trails. Wrapped in blankets, guests ride through the landscape as bells ring on the harnesses, often ending with a bonfire or warm drink by the fire.

Winter Trails and Nature

Not every visitor comes only to ski. Białka offers scenic winter walks that showcase the natural beauty of the area. The Przełom Białki Nature Reserve (Składki nad Białką) is a quiet riverside area surrounded by limestone cliffs and frozen streams — ideal for photography or a peaceful stroll. The Szlak Królewski trail runs through parts of Białka itself and offers gentle terrain suitable for families.

Those looking for something more demanding can venture a little further to the Tatra National Park, where marked winter trails lead to viewpoints over the valleys. Remember that winter hiking in the Tatras requires proper footwear, clothing, and caution.

Dining and Local Flavors

Evenings in Białka are best spent exploring local cuisine. Traditional highland (góralska) dishes are served in most restaurants which include grilled oscypek cheese, soups made with smoked meats, and hearty regional plates designed for cold weather. Upon arrival, our reception staff can recommend where to eat depending on what you’re in the mood for, from family-friendly restaurants to quiet mountain inns.
